Elections Canada Voter Information Card

If you’re registered, you should receive a voter information card in the mail. It tells you where and when you can vote. If the name and address on your card are correct and you meet the eligibility criteria stated on the card, you’re ready to vote. Bring this card with you, along with accepted ID, to make the voting process easier when you go to vote.

If you don’t get your voter information card or if the information on it is incorrect, you may not be registered or your registration may not be up to date. You can register or update your information, including your name, at your assigned polling station on election day.

How To Get Voter Information Card?

You can use the Online Voter Registration Service to print a registration certificate, if:
** you are not yet registered (or)
** your address needs to be updated.

This certificate is not required to register in person at the polls and is offered only if the service can associate your address with a polling division (within a riding).

You should bring a printed copy of the registration certificate, and sign it only at your polling station in front of the poll worker who is processing your registration.

Update Voter Information

If your voter information card contains errors, your voter information may not be up to date.

To Update Your Address:
** Use the Online Voter Registration Service;
** Contact your local Elections Canada office; or
** Call us at 1-800-463-6868 or 1-800-361-8935 (TTY).

For any other errors (e.g. in your name), contact your local Elections Canada office. You can also update your voter information when you go to vote.

Voter Information Card FAQs

Can I use my voter information card as ID?
Yes. Your voter information card can be used as proof of address, but it must be used with another piece of accepted ID to prove your identity.

I received a voter information card for someone who does not live at my address. What should I do with it?
If you received a voter information card for someone who does not live at your address, please contact your local Elections Canada office. You can then discard it.

Why did I receive two voter information cards?
There are a few reasons why you have received two voter information cards. You may have registered twice, or a change or correction could have been made to your information after your initial card was mailed. If you received more than one card addressed to you, please contact your local Elections Canada office. Please note that there are measures in place to ensure that electors do not vote twice.

Why is there a “Replacement Card” indication on my voter information card?
You received a replacement voter information card because the address of your assigned polling station or your local Elections Canada office has changed since your initial card was mailed. Please use this replacement card, as it contains the correct information.

I changed my given name(s) and informed several agencies. Why is my voter information card showing my previous name?
There are a number of reasons why Elections Canada may not have received and processed the information yet. We use several data sources to update the first and middle names of electors. Note that requests sent to any other sources are not communicated to Elections Canada. Elections Canada cannot validate and process any changes to your name or gender if some of these data sources have different information about you.

If an update is required to your name, you must make the change in person at your Elections Canada office. You can also update your voter information at your assigned polling station before you vote. Updating your information directly with Elections Canada ensures your first and middle name will appear correctly in your voter registration and on your voter information card.

Why did my deceased loved one receive a voter information card?
We may have not received information regarding the death of your loved one in time to update the lists of electors for the current election. If you received a voter information card for a deceased person, please contact the Elections Canada office at the number indicated on the card.
