How to Vote :

Voting is compulsory in Queensland and failure to do so may result in a fine. ECQ provides voting assistance services to ensure the voting process is as convenient as possible and that all electors have an equal opportunity to vote.

Pre-poll voting :
Voting prior to polling day is called pre-poll voting. During an election a list of pre-poll centres in Queensland will be listed on this website. Pre-poll centres will also be located interstate and overseas. Pre-poll voting commences three days after candidate nominations close and concludes at 6pm on the day before polling day.

Polling day :
Polling day is the name of the actual day an election is held, votes are counted and the successfully elected candidates and/or party are announced. The most common way to vote is by visiting a polling booth on polling day. The process for voting at a polling booth is the same for state and local government elections.

Visiting a polling booth :
A polling booth is the physical location an election is held, they are open from 8am to 6pm on election day and are usually located at local schools and community halls. Specific details on polling booth locations will be provided on this website during election times.

Upon entering the polling booth you will be directed to an issuing officer who will ask for your name and address.

The issuing officer will also:
** look up your name on the electoral roll
** mark your name off the roll so that you only vote once
** issue you with ballot paper/s depending on the type of election.

The issuing officer will then direct you to a booth where you can place your vote privately. Ensure you read the instructions on the ballot paper before casting your vote; place your completed ballot paper in the ballot box on your way out. Polling booth officials will be available to assist at any stage should you have any questions.

Postal voting :
If you are already registered as a special postal voter, silent elector or residing in a full postal ballot area you are not required to complete a postal vote application form as ballot papers will be automatically sent to you.

If you do not fall under one of these categories but wish to receive your ballot material in the mail you will need to apply for a postal vote.

Postal voting ;
If you are unable to attend a polling booth to place your vote on election day or visit a pre-poll centre, you can apply for a postal vote. Postal vote applications for all Queensland local and state elections will be made available on this website during election times.

All applications must be received by ECQ by 7pm on the Wednesday prior to polling day. Completed ballot material must then be received by the Returning Officer by close of business on the 10th day after polling day.

If your ballot material is lost in transit or accidentally defaced or destroyed, please call 1300 881 665 to organise a replacement.
