This page explains your options if you cannot vote in your electoral district on polling day for a by-election or the State election.
Postal voting :
You can apply for a postal vote at each election.
To be eligible to you must meet one of the following criteria that prevent you from attending a polling place on election day :
** Distance – will not be within 8 km from any polling place on election day
** Travelling – away from your residential address on election day
** Illness – sickness, infirmity or disability
** Caring for others – caring for a person who is sick, infirm or disabled
** Advanced pregnancy
** Religion – unable to attend a polling place on election day due to religious beliefs
** Working – working throughout the hours of election day
Postal vote application forms are not available until just prior to any election.
Permanent postal voting :
To be eligible to become a permanent postal voter you must meet one of the following criteria that prevent you from attending a polling place on election day :
** Distance – enrolled at an address more than 20 km away from any polling place
** Illness – sickness, infirmity or disability
** Patient at a hospital or nursing home and unable to travel to a polling place
** Caring for others – caring for a person who is sick, infirm or disabled
** Silent elector – registered as a silent elector
** Religion – unable to attend a polling place on election day due to religious beliefs
** Overseas – registered as an overseas elector
** Unable to sign your name due to physical incapacity
Once you are registered as a permanent postal voter, you will automatically receive your ballot papers in the mail for all Federal and State elections. You do not need to re-apply for future elections.
Electoral visitor teams :
Electoral visitor teams visit some hospitals, nursing homes, aged care facilities and correctional institutions before the election to take votes. To apply for a visit for the 2018 State election contact the Electoral Commission SA in 2017.
Voting outside your electoral district – absent voting :
For State elections, you can attend any polling place in South Australia, however this option is not available for by-elections. When you vote outside your electoral district you cast an absent vote. As you enter the polling place you will be directed to the Declaration Vote Officer.
The Declaration Vote Officer will :
** Check you are enrolled.
** Confirm your enrolled electoral district.
** Issue you with ballot papers for your electoral district.
** Direct you to a private voting screen where you can complete your vote.
Once you have completed your ballot papers, place them inside the declaration vote envelope, seal it, and return the envelope to the Declaration Vote Officer.
Voting in remote areas :
For State elections, some remote areas of the State will be visited by teams of electoral officials before the election day. The schedule will be advertised in metropolitan papers and regional press servicing the remote areas to be visited.
