Election NSW Elector Geo-Location System

The new Geo-location System has been devised to help the NSWEC ensure that electors are included on the NSW electoral roll within their correct electoral district or local government ward.

Related : Elections NSW SmartRoll : www.electionin.org/2835.html

The NSWEC’s Electoral Roll generally records address information in the form which is common, that is a street number, street name, locality and postcode.

Within some parts of NSW, your conventional address may not accurately locate your residence with respect to the electoral boundaries and so you may not be placed on the electoral roll for the correct electoral district or Local Government area for the next NSW election.

The NSW Electoral Commission would appreciate receiving the assistance of electors in NSW by asking for help allocating a geo-code to your residence.

The geo-code is a fixed position similar to a GPS co-ordinate (Global Positioning System) which is attached to the residence and stored against the Electoral Roll.

This will reduce the chance of any confusion before the next State election and, with appropriate privacy safeguards may also be considered for use by emergency services to locate your residence in the event of an emergency.

Steps

Type in the Geo-locator web address to your internet browser

Is this information collection allowed?
Under the NSW Parliamentary Electorates and Elections Act 1912, the NSWEC is able to request information from all NSW residents in order to determine their electoral status.

However, the information collected can ONLY be used for the creation of the NSW Electoral Register/Roll and for no other purpose or provided to any other organisation other than those prescribed within NSW legislation.

Access to the NSW Electoral Roll

It is strongly recommended that persons or entities seeking access to elector-based information from the NSWEC, read the NSWEC Disclosure of Enrolment, Electoral and Election Information Policy that was revised in February 2014 and published on this website in May 2014.

The policy details the various types of information available and how access to that information can be made by various government agencies, entities and individuals.

Entities or individuals seeking to access elector-based information via methods other than an inspection of the printed rolls at our Kent St offices, must formally write a letter to the NSW Electoral Commissioner at NSW Electoral Commissioner.

That correspondence must include the reason for the request so as to allow the Commissioner to assess and apply the legislated “public interest test”, details of which can be found in the Disclosure of Enrolment, Electoral and Election Information Policy.

The non-residential roll and the roll of occupiers and rate paying lessees for Local Government election purposes are made available for public inspection during office hours at the relevant council office.

Electoral rolls are not available for sale, and it is illegal to copy an electoral roll. Heavy penalties apply to any organisation or person who uses electoral enrolment information for a non-approved purpose.
